Genital health has always played a big role in making many people, especially women, invest in hygiene products such as intimate cleaners, wipes, sanitary items, and even deodorants to feel fresh and clean. But the real question is, are they safe for use?
According to a 2015 report by WebMD, it was found out that a typical woman had gone through more than about 12,000 tampons and sanitary pads over the past several decades whenever they are going through their menstrual cycle.
This has brought several questions to the surface- the most pressing concern observed by the women’s health advocacy groups and Members of Congress includes the lack of research we have made regarding the safety of pads, tampons, and various other feminine hygiene products. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, has said that “The reality is menstrual health has been considered a taboo subject for too long. It’s time that feminine hygiene products are thoroughly researched so that we can ensure that complete and accurate information is being collected and made readily assessable.”
However, despite these claims, the FDA and product creators have stated that these products are safe as they do not contain any dangerous chemicals but only just trace amounts. Even so, it has made many women around the world uneasy as they still have not gotten their concrete proof that states that these products are 100% safe.
Since these products deal with directly being used on our genitals, many researchers have taken the initiative- for example, agency scientists are beginning to work with the EPA to take a proper look at the chemicals that are of concern in care products such as pads and tampons.
After extensive research, they found a few crucial details regarding the manufacturing of tampons. According to the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program (NTP), Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., they have mentioned that tampons contain various potentially abrasive materials and dangerous chemicals. For example, the tampons that are treated via the use of bleach have been shown to contain a noticeable amount of dioxins. However, based on the two studies conducted in 2002 and 2005, women have to constantly deal with an even higher amount of dioxins that come from the very food and drink they consume.
Even so, there are still many organizations and companies that are dedicated to providing their clients with the best options so that they do not have to compromise their personal hygiene and safety at any cost.
